Pairing issues

I have an Apple Watch series 1 and an iPhone 11 that I’m trying to pair. My iPhone is up-to-date with the new iOS. When I go to pair the two devices, the iPhone recognizes that it is paired to the watch, but the watch is not recognizing that it is being paired to the phone. Are the two devices compatible, and if so how can I successfully pair them?
