I only have one devise authorized, but when I try to authorize my computer for iTunes it says I can't because I have "5" computers already authorized. Frustrating. It won't let me play music I purchased using an older computer...

That count of authorized computers can accumulate if you have old computers that were never deauthorized. So, just use Deauthorize All, and then re-authorize just the one(s) you are still using.
