What is spotlight for?

I have just had to wipe and reinstall my OS (because of another issue) and it has highlighted to me how utterly pointless spotlight is.

brand new OS install, nothing installed yet.

I type: "Applications" into spotlight... nothing, maybe search the internet?

ok, I type a full path to a file that 100% exists.... nope, nothing...

What is spotlight actually for if not for finding things. and what can I use that does find things? (before anyone suggests finder, finder just crashes if I ask it to look for anything)

If you just reinstalled the OS, you have to give the system time for spotlight to finish indexing the contents of your drive.
