How do you convert a 2019 Mac Word doc to 2019 Windows Word?

How do you convert a 2019 Mac Word doc to 2019 Windows Word? I saved my Mac file through both Mac 2019 Word and Pages as a .doc, .docx, and .rtf. Windows Word 2019 does not open. Windows 2007 Word does.

If I save the file on 2019 Mac Word as a .txt, Windows 2019 Word can open it but all the single and double quotes are removed. Since I'm an editor and the file is a novel, I can't have quotes disappearing on me.

I tried to move the 2019 Mac Word doc to my Google drive. I then converted the file to .doc. Windows 2019 Word could not open that either.

Seems like the old Windows 2007 Word can read the conversions but this ability was lost in the Windows 2019 Word. I'd rather not keep the older Word 2007 on my Windows machine just for conversions. Seems like Windows Word 2019 should be able to handle this. Or, conversely, seems like the Mac 2019 Word should be able to prepare files for Windows 2019 Word conversion.

The error is when opening the converted doc on my Windows 2019 Word is:

Word experienced an error trying to open the file.

Try these suggestions.

  • Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
  • Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space.
  • Open the file with the Text Recovery converter.

I'm saving it to downloads and have no problems reading other files there, so permissions is fine. There is also plenty of disk space. I don't know what Text Recovery converter they are referring to. Chances are that this Text Recovery converter will also strip away my quotes (and that doesn't solve my problem).

thanks

SOLVED

1) After you save the .docx file in Mac 2019 Word, go look at the permissions of the file. Make sure it is saved as read/write.

2) Move the .docx file you created to your Windows machine.

3) Edit the properties of that file on Windows (right mouse click->properties). There is a 'Security' feature that says this file is blocked because it came from another computer. There is a check box to unblock the file. Unblock the file and save.

4) You can now open the .docx file on your Windows 2019 Word.

Text recovery likely preserves quotes but removes all formatting.

Looking at the Microsoft 365 version of Word on my Mac I have .odt and .xml alternatives which might be worth trying if you have them. One would expect both .doc & .docx formats to be cross platform compatible. When you use File > Save As on the Mac do you have more than one format that outputs a .doc file?
