mic volume lowers by itself

Like many people, I have to be on zoom (etc) these days. People keep saying they're having trouble hearing me, and I'm getting a sore throat. When I open the Sound pref Input tab, I see a slider for Internal Microphone. If I leave that window open when I'm on zoom (or Skype, or FaceTime), I can see the slider moving by itself during a call, and I have to keep putting it back up.

I saw an article on this but no solution. (https://sixcolors.com/post/2016/05/the-mystery-of-os-xs-haunted-input-volume-slider/)

Does anyone know how to stop this from happening?

Hey j'ski,

We see that you're noticing an issue where the microphone slider moves on its own during a call in the Zoom app, as well as other apps.

It looks like there is a setting in the Zoom app that automatically adjusts the microphone volume. You can change it in the Zoom app by clicking your profile picture, then clicking Settings, then selecting Audio. Here's more information about this setting: Changing settings in the desktop client or mobile app – Zoom Help Center. Let us know if changing this setting fixes it for Zoom and if other apps are still affected.

If Zoom, and other apps, are still affected, try creating a test user account and see if the issue persists. Creating a test user account can help determine if the issue is caused by third-party software: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. There's steps to take further in that resource, depending if the issue happens in the test user account or not but you can also let us know the results.

Let us know if that resolves the issue for you.
