Apple pay breaks - insists that address and zip must match

Apple pay errors out when making purchase from macbook. It insists that the addresses don't match. They do match. This seems to be a common problem - I've googled it and tried all the 'fixes' up to and including backing everything out and starting over. Please don't tell me to check the address in settings/appleID/etc. been there done that.
