Downloading third-party apps isn't done through Software Update which should be in your System Preferences. From where are you trying to download the app?

Apps purchased from the App Store will update themselves automatically whenever an update becomes available. Some do not update automatically but notify you of an update with a red badge on the App Stores' icon in the Dock. In this case open App Store and click on the Updates option on the left sidebar.
Software Update preferences is used to update/upgrade Apple software which is not distributed or sold on the App Store.
The App Store... I just thought that the reason why it’s not downloading is because it need an update
