Fn key on external Apple Bluetooth keyboard not working as expected on iPad OS 13.5.1

Hi, all.

I have an older Bluetooth Apple Wireless keyboard (A1255). Using it with 13.5.1 on a 3rd generation iPad Pro 12.9.

I like to use the <fn> key in conjunction with the <delete> key to execute a forward character delete instead of the standard backspace behaviour. It technically works BUT pressing the <fn> key also activates the pop up menu option to select any keyboards accessible to the system even though the External Keyboard Modifier Keys setting is set to function as a normal Fn key, not as the Global key.

Is this just a bit of an obscure bug because the keyboard is an older model? Like I said, the forward delete does actually work, and the Fn key works with the top row of the keyboard as expected. I just can’t stop that stupid language pop up menu from appearing whenever I press it. Which is bugging me because Apple clearly thought of this when they provided the setting in the first place. So what gives?

Not the end of the world but kinda irritating. I was wondering if anyone else had run into this problem or if I’m sailing in this boat alone.

I had this issue and I’m pleased to say I’ve resolved it!! Running iPadOS 14 (Public Beta 2) at least.

Rather counter-intuitively, you have to set the key to “Globe” and then it exhibits the desired behaviour. FN + Backspace = forward DELETE, without bringing up the emoji shortcut.

I hope this works for you - has been driving me mad for days.

Hey, many thanks for the reply, Stu.Broo. It's great to hear the new version of iPad OS solves the issue.

I'm very tempted to go try it for myself but I'm wary of running a beta OS on my iPad. I've heard some woeful tales of lost data and bricked devices so I'm going to hold off for the official release. As soon as possible I'll check if it works for me too.

I'll post back here with the result.
