Iphone XS Max Face Id malfunction with unusual battery drain after 13.5.1 update

After updating to ios 13.5.1 the iphone xs max was working fine for about two weeks. Then suddenly the face ID stopped working with an unusual battery drain on the same day. It says "try setting up face id after iphone cools down". Tried everything possible several times including factory reset, but no joy. Support is of not much help. Obviously, next is to step into apple care. But before that is there any way to know if it's a hardware failure or software glitch of 13.5.1 update? Thanx.

Did you restore from backup after factory resetting?

If so then try a full factory reset without restore.

There are many millions of users with no problem after 13.5.1 but a few hundreds who have had similar problems.

Of those, a good proportion have fixed the problems by full factory restore then building up apps from scratch.

Obviously make your photos and data safe on a computer or in a cloud server first. You will need to do that before taking it in anyway.

Thanx for your response. Did a full factory reset without using restore at all. Downloaded all apps as you would for a new phone. In the bargain, had to reset the watch4 as I forgot to unpair it before phone restore. Paired it after reset and watch is working fine but the problems on phone remain. Additionally, discovered malfunctioning ambient light sensor as camera in portrait mode is erratic and auto brightness toggle is missing in accessibility->display setting. The probability of a hardware failure seems to be higher, so only choice left is to take it for repairs. Wonder how without dropping the phone or water damage, suddenly the phone components have failed that to from apple. Been a apple user since more than one and half decades but the first time I'm having doubts! Anyway thanx again for the help.
