I tried to install Mac OS Sierra to my MacBook Pro 17 early 2011 - is there a limitation?

If it really is the model you say, the maximum OS is High Sierra 10.13.6.
What happens when you try to update? Are you getting any error messages such as not enough free storage space?
The InstallOS.pkg does not install Sierra at that point but creates the Install macOS Sierra.app in your Applications folder.
Locate it and double-click to start the installation process.
my current OS is 10.10.5 so I tried Sierra 10.12, the installation package completed and I restarted but About my Mac still shows Yosemite
