Make sure "Show All Devices" is selected from the "View" drop down menu in Disk Utility.

The one on the top left of Disk Utility. Then select the top level of the drive and click "Erase".
How it is done from the Terminal when you specifically know which device represents the mounted USB stick. In the following example, I have mounted a USB stick named A_UTILITY as /Volumes/A_UTILITY which shows on my Desktop. I know it is /dev/disk3 from running the df utility:
