A Mid 2010 MacBook Pro can run up to Mac OS 10.13 "High Sierra."
You can get High Sierra here:

NOTE: Others have recommended only using Safari to download the software. FireFox users are apparenty having issues with macOS download links.

So I was looking into an external hard drive as back up to use with Time Machine, but most require 10.12 or later to use. I only have 10.9.5. Any suggestions on external hard drives that will work with Time Machine and 10.9.5?
You can go up to MacOS 10.13 High Sierra with a mid-2010 MBP. So yes, you can update to 10.9.5 if you want...or higher.
Thank you so much! Should I do a back up first on iCloud or time machine ? Which is better?
Thank you!
Time Machine is a complete backup, I’d use that.
Thank you! :-)
