"Superdrive won't accept discs: It worked! I only had to go to step B, didn't have to reset the SMC and NVRAM. Thank you so much!”

You are welcome.
More on Safe Boot:
The caches that were set are what were getting in the way here. And a Safe Boot fixes that, relocating the caches to their office locations.

"Superdrive won't accept discs: Thank you for the reply! I followed the suggestion and it does indeed show up. Any other suggestions or does this lead you to believe this could a malfunction with the superdrive itself? It makes a noise when plugged into the USB drive so it isn't completely dead. "

You are welcome
A: I would try Step II of above
1. Restart: the Mac
2. Unplug: the Drive
3. Wait: 30 Seconds
4. Plug in: the Drive
5. Boot Up: the Mac
6. Log In: as the same user
If that does not work, then...
B. Boot Into Safe Mode:
In Safe Mode, all caches are set aside, and items are reset to how they should be. So, once booted into it, shut down then proceed to
I. Log into Safe Mode:
1. Restart: the Mac
2. Boot Into: Safe Mode (hold down shift key upon boot)
3. Log In: as the same user
4. Shut Down: the Mac
II. Unplug and Plug Drive and Boot
1. Unplug: the Drive
2. Wait: 30 Seconds
3. Plug in: the Drive
4. Boot Up: the Mac
5. Log In: as the same user
If that is of no success...
C. Reset the SMC and your NVRAM:
Sometimes when changes are made to the system(i.e. updates), system configurations (i.e. for Ports) become manipulated, technically. So, reset the SMC and NVRAM. Your hard drive may not be being read promptly, so resetting these, all of the ports would be configured to how they should be. Then, restart the Mac.

Is this Even Seen?
Is there a drive even seen? If not, you may need to go about reinstalling the macOS. If you removed the plugin somehow, then reinstalling it would be your only option.
Revealing the Drive's Connection:
Use this Link: Get System Information for your Mac - Apple Support
I. First off, see if the drive is even seen:
II. If Nothing is Showing, then...
III. See if you can see it and use it.
