1. inability to close photos

Most iOS apps do not "close" in the same sense that computer apps do. They are designed to be available at all times.

2. photos closing in its own while I’m editing or just whenever it wants to

See >>> https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201398

duplication of photos which isn’t helped with consistent use of apps to reduce/delete duplicate photos

I have been using ,acOS and iOS for may years and have never had a duplicate photo that I did not purposely create a duplicate of. How many sources for photos do you have? Multiple iOS devices? Mac/PC?

Please read the following user tip and restate your question/problem in detail: Writing an Effective Apple Support Communities Question - Apple Community

Which versions of Catalina and Photos are you running?

What Mac model do you have?

Is your library a managed or referenced library?

Where is your library located?  If on an external HD how is that drive formatted and connected to your Mac?

Do you have the iCloud Library enabled in the library?  If so, do you also have "Optimize Mac Storage" enabled.

As you are reporting problems with Photos Mac and not Photos iOS, I'll ask the community hosts to move your question to the Photos for Mac Forum.

if you are having repeated crashes and Photos is hanging and cannot be quit, you may have items in your Photos Library that are incompatible with Photos 5 on Catalina, for example older videos, in a format, that is no longer compatible with Photos.

You may want to check your Photos Library systematically for photos and videos, that may be in an unsupported format, photos you imported while still running iPhoto or Aperture. Remove PDFs, BMP files, PICT files, audio files, any videos in a format, that are listed here as incompatible with iMovie: About legacy media in iMovie for macOS - Apple Support

They might be causing trouble in Photos 5 as well. Incompatible media should have been weeded out and converted before upgrading to Catalina and Photos 5. Now it is more difficult to convert them, because Photos 5 can no longer process them: If you can't play videos in Photos on your Mac - Apple Support

honestly look at the problems listed under the topic ‘photos’ and these 3 are repeated over and over. I think the ‘best’ solution to the ‘failure to close’ problem was to force closure. But why is that a solution... surely it is possible to come up with better software solutions than that.

Why do I need to look it? Contact Apple support if you didn't get the answer in the support forums.
