Bootcamp for Catalina

Hey there,

I'm using a MacBook Pro Mid2012. For Bootcamp, it seems you need to boot off a usb drive. Is this true? I just want to confirm this before I go buy a usb drive.

Installing Catalina while already running bootcamp partition? Will upgrading from High Sierra to Catalina (or even just Mojave) disturb or render inaccessible my Bootcamp partition which runs Windows? Or will upgrading to Catalina leave the partition installed and accessible? I'd like to be certain it will not before I upgrade, and I really do not wish to have to re-install Windows and all of my Windows programs and data if upgrading to Catalina does result in losing access to my Bootcamped Windows.

bootcamp I have MacBook Pro with 251gb hard drive. I would like to install bootcamp for windows. Can install the bootcamp on external hard drive and use it from there with my MacBook Pro? I am running Big Sur with M1
