How do i connect a thunderbolt 3 on new macbook pro to an old macbook pro with an ethernet or a thunderbolt 1? I want to use migration assistant.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

You will need an adapter of some sort. If you get a Thunderbolt adapter, you will also likely need a Thunderbolt cable. If you have an ethernet cable you could get an ethernet adapter.


However, my advice would be to purchase an external hard drive. Any hard drive that has USB 3 will be fine. You may still need an adapter for the USB-C, but that will come in handy again. Make a backup on the old machine. Then migrate from that backup on the new machine. When you are done, use the drive as a Time Machine backup for the new machine.
