iMessage notification priority

I am signed in to iMessage on my Mac and iPhone. When I'm actively using my Mac I get iMessage notifications there, but they do NOT trigger a sound notification on my iPhone. So it looks like notifications give priority to an active device but I want to make sure iMessage notifications always come through on my iPhone even if I'm actively using my Mac.

Is that possible? Otherwise I'll just sign out of iMessage on my Mac and won't bother using it there.

We understand you'd like to receive notifications for Messages on your iPhone, even when you are using Messages for Mac.

Notifications are sent to the active device, and therefore you will not receive notifications on your iPhone if you are using Messages for Mac.
