Lost (stolen) AirPod pros.

Hi, my AirPod pros have gone missing from my locker at work.. they are showing on my find my app as at work still but they are disconnected from my phone so I can’t play a sound to locate them. Does this mean they are still there and have just been lost although I have searched everywhere or does this mean someone has them and it will only show me where I last used them? Any advice to locate or just to explain would be appreciated. Thank you
