Slow or non existent startup on imac

How do I troubleshoot a Mac that won't finish startup process- what keys do I press at startup to troubleshoot.

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.12

What size and year model is the iMac?

see > Identify your iMac model - Apple Support

First try starting up in Safe Mode followed by a normal restart.

see > How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Then if you are still having slow startups issues or getting stuck at a startup screen,

see > If your Mac doesn't start up all the way - Apple Support
