screen has a white vertical thick line on screen

My screen started showing a white thick vertical line on the screen. It is about a 1 1/2 inches thick. I have tried turning ipad off and back on and playing with the screen settings. I can vaguely see text on the screen through the white line. If I hit the text that shows through the white thick line, the screen will respond as if it is not there. It is just extremely annoying to be able to see the full screen clearly. Any idea what this is and how you fix it?

As an initial step, a forced-restart of the iPad should be attempted - as this will often resolve an isolated issue:


If iPad isn’t responding, do one of the following:


  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On an iPad with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.




If the iPad doesn’t turn on, or if it gets stuck during start up, see the Apple Support article If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t turn on or is frozen.


If a restart does not resolve the issue, given the problem that you describe, I suggest that you seek help directly from Apple Support. The link to Contact Support is at top-right of this page.
