Please help- Re: Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode)

I attempted the update to iPad software version (3.2.1. I did not get an error message, however now my iPad is essentially frozen. All the screen shows is a USB plug with an arrow to an iTunes icon

It is not recognized as an iPad by iTunes or my computer, it is an Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode) in the Device Manager. It is seen as new hardware and the computer says "windows needs to install driver software for your Apple Mobile device (Recovery Mode)"

I have tried the hard reboot, different USB ports and cords, different computer, uninstalled iTunes and then re-installed without success. I also followed the directions on apple support page "iPhone, iPad, or iPod is not recognized properly by computer when USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date" http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538

The drivers folder is supposed to have an usbaapl.inf file but is empty when my malfunctioning iPad is attached to the computer. Is this what I need?

What makes this even more frustrating is that my son's iPad functions fine and is recognized when attached to the same computer with the same cord and USB port.
He has not attempted the software update. No FUD.

Please help, what do I need to do?
Thanks in advance
Pat
