Problems using the Thunderbolt adapter 3 (USB-C)

Actually I have a MacBook Air 2018 and iMac 2017. I had problems using the thunderbolt adapter 3 (usb-C) to thunderbolt 2. I don't know which cable will use to connect this devices? I purchases two cables but not working in this devices.

thunderbolt 2 to USB 3 Hi I just got a nice mid 2015 MBP and need to find an adaptor to USB 3 as I use the built in USB ports for other items. Looks like i have to do thunderbolt2 to usb-c male then find a usb-c male female to usb 3 female? Seems crazy there is no straight adaptor or did I miss something? Can't find online for one cable solution. Thanks for the help

Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to USB-C adaptor doesn't work on older Macs? I have acquired a Thunderbolt 3 external disk. I bought an Apple Thunderbolt 2 cable and Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adaptor as indicated by LaCie, and connected the disk to my iMac (Late 2015) running Catalina. The disk powers up and then shuts down. Is this because the adaptor is really only for connecting a new iMac to an old Thunderbolt 2 device? I understood it to work in both directions but my setup does not work. Same problem on a 2015 MacBook.

You need a TB3 cable that connects from the MBA to the TB3 end of the adapter. The TB2 end connects to your iMac.
