Rays of Light Effect

Is there a good way to create a shining rays of light effect around an object in Motion? It doesn't have to be fancy; simple will do just fine. But I'm thinking of a series of light rays that extend in a radial way from around an object. If I use replicators, can I reposition each iteration separately and keyframe them separately?


If I do this manually, I would want to extend the outer edge of a line, right? If so, how can I extend the outer edge of a line without changing the position of the inside edge of a line? For example, I want a line to stay rooted in one place from where the lines (or light rays) would emanate from.

As Fox says, the zoom filter is good for a light rays effect.


There is a tutorial from Ripple Training that might also give you some ideas.

But ..I think you might be describing something else though, like a cartoony style, like the image? Is that right?


There's a generator in your library '2 color ray' that you can adapt for it..using masks to form circular area.


Or, as you said, you can work with replicators and make this sunburst easily. That has more advantages with the various parameters you can use to animate. You have various parameters in the replicator for rotation and scale etc If you want to animate the elements of a replicator independently then you will need to learn how to use the sequence replicator behavior.

Keep in mind - like you would create an opacity adjustment layer/opacity mask in a vector graphics app, you can use the same steps in Motion to get the opacity running from centre outwards in the sunburst.


About the outline VS direction/fill - we discussed this a while ago on another topic. If you set the outline to under the fill, then the outline will adjust without pushing into the fill area. But if you just want an outline - no fill, then the only method I know of is to make a compound shape - you will use another shape to clip the outline to that the outline appears to only increase outward and away. Here's a project file with both examples. This is how I work when I need the outline to stay clear of the file or inner area - there are probably better ways but I have not discovered that workflow yet.

Okay. I tried a few methods out.


It's pretty close. But mostly I noticed that I was able to adjust the gradient for the colors more so than for the opacity or amount of transparency. Whatever is simple works best. As you noted, this is just a personal project. (I'm learning Motion during this process.) Ultimately, I'm just looking for something that grades similarly to your blue light beam example above.


Here's what I've tried. I'm just playing with the gradient fill built into the layer itself. I'm assuming that if I want a concentric radial pattern that my x and y coordinates should match, right?

Also, is there a way to manually set the exact x,y points for an anchor point? Rather than dragging an anchor point around, can this be done more precisely?

Hi


The opacity controls sit above the color controls in the gradient panel. There are 2 gradient controls in that panel - the color gradient and the opacity gradient. The color gradient has 2 markers/2 values set by default. The opacity gradient only has 1 marker/1 value set by default. Just like you added more markers for the color - you can add more markers for the opacity and then have X value at one side and Y value at the other - for example - from 0 to 100.

The anchor point controls are located in the properties section of the inspector - that is where you can make manual adjustments instead of dragging.

An Opacity/Transparency mask is a general vector graphic method to make opacity blend from X value to Y value ( or greater) over a layer....usually to make a layer appear to fade out.

You can do it in Motion various ways with anything that lets you apply a gradient for colouring as it will let you create a gradient for opacity to in the same tool. Shape layers, airbrush paths, replicators, text layers., gradient generators and so on. For a filter - there is a specific filter that you could use = the 'fill' filter - that is in the stylise filter category.


Actually, if the layer can have a gradient applied, you don't need to apply a mask, you can just directly fade out the opacity with the gradient opacity tool - it all depends on the project and what works best.
