when using a pages template, do you save it with a new name or duplicate it in order to create a new document and still keep the template?

You can save/save as… the current document that the template will be based on, before choosing to File menu : Save as Template… : Add to Template Chooser , and give it a meaningful name. You change the File menu : Duplicate to File menu : Save As… by pressing the option key. I never duplicate documents, and may or may not save a document before adding it to the template chooser — depending on its complexity and the time it takes to build the template.
