any ideas why my Mac keeps shutting down

I understand your Mac simply shuts down spontaneously with no obvious cause. Unless it is accompanied with a message such as described in If your Mac restarted because of a problem, then an SMC Reset is justified: How to reset the SMC of your Mac.
