How to use free year of Apple tv on Roku

1. I got a new iPad in March.
2. I signed up for the free 1-yr of Apple tv in May but didn’t watch it (don’t like to watch films, etc. on iPad).
3. Got a Roku today and installed Apple tv on it.
4. Logged in to my Apple account on it.
5. Followed all the steps for linking my iPad and the Apple tv app. (Does anyone find the fact that the channel is called Apple TV and there is also a device called Apple TV a bit confusing when trying to explain things?)
6. Was offered “1-week free trial”, after which, it would be $4.99 a month.
7. Have worked all evening trying to figure out how to use my 1-year free. It doesn’t seem to acknowledge I have one, nor does Apple say I’m valid for another one.
8. This is why I bought the Roku. How frustrating!
9. Has anyone had a similar experience.? How did you resolve it?
