How can I change the diplay

I have already found and used the accessibility on this machine. On my 2011 MacBook Pro I was able to dictate the minimum type size (14) for the display of most things and most things were displayed as black on white. On this machine even having applied the very nearly maximum contrast mostly stuff is displayed in grey in white - in other words next to invisible. Even when I zoom to size that I can read, if I have 2/3 pages open at once I cannot see the lines that distinguish which page is which. Can I change the basic setting for contrast and type size?

Your pic is readable here, & my eyesight is very poor.

Manually adjust brightness

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Displays, then click Display.
  2. Drag the Brightness slider to adjust the brightness of your display.

Depending on the type of display connected to your Mac, you may also see a Contrast slider that you can use to adjust the display’s contrast.

Set brightness from the menu bar

On some newer portable computers, you can help optimize battery use by setting the display brightness to approximately 75%. You see this option in the menu bar only when the display’s brightness is set to a level that uses a significant amount of energy.

  • On your Mac, click the battery icon  in the menu bar, then click  Display Brightness.

Note: If you don’t see the battery icon in the menu bar, you need to show the battery’s status.

You can’t adjust the brightness of some older Apple displays. In OS X 10.10 and later, the Brightness slider may no longer appear in the Display pane of Displays preferences.

For specific information about the brightness of your display, check the documentation that came with your display.

Neither. If there is an answer to this problem I would expect it to be system preferences since it is clearly a system issue. (Well unless the whole world has got fashionable with grey on white.) It is also seems probable that I am missing something. I have added a screen shot here I actually cannot see it on my screen at all and remember I do have the accessibility contrast slider almost at maximum.

Thank you for your ideas but they do not resolve the issue. There is a brightness slider under the display preferences, sadly not a contrast slider. There is also brightness control on the keyboard. What the display control did is allow me to control the resolution - oddly that changes the size of the image - meaning that it is easier to read but does not fit on the screen. However many things are still not clear.
