Your Connection Is Not Private

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately I keep getting the error message 'Your connection is not private' (NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID), on both my Google Chrome and Safari browser. I've cleared my cache, my time and date is correct. I've tried browsing through incognito and I've still got the same error, and ensured that my browser is the most up to date. I restart my computer and it works for about two days and then suddenly the same error pops up.

Does anyone have any tips on how to fix this? Thanks in advance for your help!

JuneFields,

Thanks for getting back to us with these additional details. We'll continue with a few more steps that will help isolate the behavior further.

Let's have you boot up into safe mode. It’s a way to start up your Mac so it performs certain checks, repairs, emptying of system cache, and prevents some software from automatically loading: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support. Once in safe mode, check to see if the same behavior continues with your web browsers. Sometimes safe mode can successfully resolve some issues. With this being said, after testing in safe mode, restart and log in as normal to see if that helps resolve the issue.

If the issue remains, we will have you test a new user account next, to isolate if this is a user-specific issue, or a system-wide issue. Here’s how: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support.

Keep us posted on the outcome.

Thank you.

Hi Michelle,

Thank you for your help!

I'e followed those steps and nothing has made a difference. My updates are all complete with nothing outstanding.

I connect my Mac to the internet via Wi-Fi. I also own a Windows machine sat close to it, and I can access the same website with no issue on that machine whatsoever. I have tried using my phone hotspot and still receiving the same error message. The alert does only appear for a few websites, but seems to be intermittent. Sometimes it won't let me access google, sometimes it will, sometimes no blogger.com, other times it's fine. Then it seems the longer I go without a restart, the more websites are affected.

Thank you for all your help!

Usual cause is either not using https to connect to the website, or a problem with the web server configuration and its (lack of) connection security.

In this case, it appears the certificate authority associated with the digital certificate being presented by the website is unrecognized, untrusted, or invalid.

Check with the website maintainer.

Hi Leanne,

Thanks for your help and sorry for the delay, I was waiting for the error to occur again.

Unfortunately when I reboot the computer, the issue disappears regardless. I went to try the method of going to a new user account, but realised I didn't have that option set. However, when I logged out my account and back in, the problem was instantly solved going to the same website that it'd previously shown seconds earlier as being an issue, being completely fine.

I'm really not sure what's going on and really appreciate your help!

Thanks for your response! Unfortunately I've already tested this and I don't believe it's with one website as it's happening on multiple, which changes when I log out/back in, or restart my computer. But thank you for your help 😊!

If arising with multiple websites, some additional suspects can include add-on anti-malware, add-on anti-virus, add-on cleaner apps, and add-on VPN clients. Some of those can insinuate themselves into network connections, and occasionally with decidedly mixed results. Any of those sorts of apps installed here?
