After importing a SOURCE .mov file (720x480), the IMPORTED file (original media) has slightly reduced quality. Upon EXPORT the reduced quality is maintained (regardless of Master File settings). How can I duplicate the quality of the SOURCE .mov

After importing a SOURCE .mov file (720x480 [640x480] 4:3 [pixel aspect 10:11], DV/DVCPRO - NTSC SD (6-1-6)), the IMPORTED file (original media) has slightly reduced quality (lowered resolution). The lowered resolution is apparent in the viewer (set to BETTER QUALITY). Upon EXPORT the reduced quality is maintained (regardless of Master File settings).

How can I maintain the quality (resolution) of the SOURCE .mov in the edited EXPORT file?

iMac 27″, macOS 10.15

Thank you for your prompt reply. I obviously am not familiar with video artifacts caused by digital upscaling but based on your comments, I now know that my happenstance results are 'normal'. I will probably take your suggested option and use project settings matching the SOURCE file. Later, I may gain some upscaling experience by trial with Compressor.

This is normal, because you do upscale to 1080. You need to either put up with it, or create a project with the resolution of the source file. You can try to make upscale through the Apple Compressor using the best upscaling settings

First, thank you so much for your quick response.. I really appreciate it. Secondly, thanks for you expertise. Based on you response, I have changed the project settings (to interlaced with parameters associated with the SOURCE file) and, "presto!" the higher resolution returned to the EXPORTED file. (I now know enough to get into trouble - again!)

You're uprezing 480i media to 1080? I'm surprised it looks as good as it does. The noise reduction looks like it's doing a remarkable job.
