hi paul,
This might be what you're looking for.
Numbers has a copy style and paste style that is, I believe, similar to format painter in Excel.
-or-
Right click in the menu bar and select Customize Toolbar - drag the copy style and paste style to the menu bar. Numbers uses an eye dropper Icon as apposed to the Excel Paint Brush.
Just follow the same procedure as outlined above except click on the copy style, paste style icons instead.

Thank you Tom, that's what I was looking for, and I have adopted your suggestion with the icons. It's not quite as efficient as the Excel version, which only needs one icon and thus no click needed on the Paste Style button. But pretty close. It's a function which I find myself using a lot, so it will be very useful.
Hi Tom (and Paul),
One more way of doing copy sytle/paste style:
Use the keyboard;
Standard copy: command-C
Standard Paste: command-V
Copy Style: option-command-C
Paste Style: option-command-V
Regards,
Barry
