iPod Classic 160gb making strange noises. Help!

Hey guys, looking for some advice. Originally I've always had the 2007 80gb model recently when that stopped working I decided to get another one but this time the 2009 160gb model. Obviously secondhand but it turned up in amazing condition I checked the stats which seemed to be good also. So I've started putting music on and last night I thought I'd check to make sure everything was working okay and music was playing... So here's where the issue/noise problem:

You can hear the HDD spinning when say going through menu's and loading up "shuffle songs" and every couple of songs you can hear the disk spin and make a faded "peeew" sort of noise and then a muffed scratchy noise as it stops loading. Obviously it sounds like its loading the data up but it's concerning as its a noticeable noise. On my older 80gb model there would occasionally be some faint noise but not as noticeable. And it wouldn't occur as often as it is on this 2009 model.

Now after a few google searches it seems like this was apparently normal for the 2009 160gb model. That people were concerned and the response would be it's just the HDD loading data. But it's now 10 plus years since they were released so was hoping for more information if this is normal and I shouldn't be as worried. Or if I should return this one.

Would syncing my music with out all the cover art make the noise less noticeable as obviously its loading the songs and the art and I've made sure all my music has the correct art work this time around where as on my previous iPod the majority of my music was missing the art work so it had less to load.

HDSmartData

Reallocs: 0

Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks

The spinning up of the hard drive to read data is normal. How noisy it is will, I guess, vary from device to device as components age. How noticable the noise is will depend on environment. You might notice more if the device is on a hard surface than when it is in your pocket. I don't think removing artwork will help. Artwork adds approximately 1-2% to the file size, and the art you see on the display is cached so the device isn't fetching new art during playback, it is just getting the next track into memory so it can be played.

Stats look OK, although ideally the max. operating temp. shouldn't get above 35C.

It is a long time since I tested iPod with and without artwork, backup when including it was an option in iTunes. Obviously some additional processing is required but it is managed as a background process behind throwing up the text results so it should slow things down as you browse the content, and it makes identifying what you have much easier. I don't recall any significant response issues, but then I've always been very keen on having all tracks with artwork and maximum consistency among my metadata.

Yeah I've gathered that the spinning of the hard drive is quite a common thing after some research. It's just something I guess I didn't expect due my previous experience's of always having the 6th gen 80 GB model and never really hearing the hard drive spin. I think on my iPod before upgrading to this one made a bit of noise towards the end of its life but other then that there was nothing unless I'd put it directly to my ear.

The noise I was mostly concerned about was obviously the "peeew" and scratchy noise when it stopped loading data as I could hear that within an "arms reach" of me. And with it happening every few songs skipped in Shuffle so thought best ask before I go through the process of returning it.

How does the HDSmartData look? cause cosmetically the iPod looks to have hardly had any use and the stat's seem to be pretty good for how old it is.

Last question, about the art work so it should be fine with it all. and not collectively cause any harm to the loading strain when shuffling through my music? ... Cause when I do finish syncing music I'd say I'll have around 13,000 songs give or take roughly with 1000's of artwork. So even with that amount would I be fine. Or would that cause any lag or delay.

Thank's @turingtest2 for taking time to read and actually give me a response, I great appreciate it.

Yeah the max temp seems pretty high, Considering all the iPod classics I've had over the past 10 years have come from a place called CeX and they've all usually looked like trash and lasted me a good couple years. And the ones I've checked Stats on in the past have always had somewhere between 42-54c on the max temp I'm not going to be too worried as this one looked well looked after. Plus usually the first 2 stats on previous one actually had high-ish numbers and not 0's and even had one with 1 pending sector before and all have given me least 2-3 years off life.

Would you say I should be fine to keep this one or should I consider returning it would you say? and play the luck of the draw again with getting another one. I had to return the one I got before lockdown which had crazy stat's and a faulty headphone jack. So it's just complete luck on what I'd be getting sadly.

Well I shall see how things go once I've fully loaded it up and see the performance is and if it's bearable I'll keep that artwork. As you said makes easier to identify what your listening to at a quick glance of the screen. That's why I got all the art-work with the songs this time as previously I never cared but would then have to also fully look at the screen to check what song I was listening too.

Thanks @turingtest2

Okay will do.

Thankfully has 24 month warranty so I should be covered for a good while. Maybe just needs some good use again if it's been unused and hardly used in the first place. Yeah the previous one's I've had have all been cosmetically horrible and obvious signs of being dropped and with stat's that look like the internal's ain't in decent nick. So fingers crossed. It's such a shame they disconnected the classic models nothing beats having the click wheel can't stand touch screens. I think rather then forking out for another second hand one when this eventually does go, I might as well pay out to get it all upgraded battery wise and get a flash drive or something.

Cheers
