FCPx crashes when exporting from external drive only

Latest Catalina OS and FCPx.

2016 15” MBP with touchbar.

Internal 2TB SSD.

G-Technology G-DRIVE mobile Pro 1TB Thunderbolt 3 External SSD

No problem working or exporting when all data is on internal drive.

No problem working when all data is on external drive (actually reads/writes a bit faster than my internal).

However, exporting from external drive, it almost always crashes. Sometimes it just quits in the middle without any notification. Once I had a kernel panic (are they still called that?) and the whole machine shut down. Same result with new projects, so it’s not a particular render file or similar.

Very frustrating because I bought this external to use as an FCPx media drive for active projects and then dump them off for archive storage. But I’ve had to move everything over to my internal (sometimes 500 gigs of 4K files) just to export a project.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Is Prey running all the time? Reboot without reopening applications. Open only FCP and try the export. You might also try testing a new admin user. You have a lot of plugins. Are they from FxFactory or other vendors? Plugins often run into problems with OS updates. The kernel panics are a serious cause for concern as everything on the computer should be sandboxed from the system, especially in Catalina.

Configuration Profiles:

This computer has configuration profiles installed.

This is unusual. Configuration profiles are typically only used in machines that are managed as part of an installation - like a school lab, for instance. Other than that, they may indicate the presence of adware.

Do you know what these profiles are?

If you go to System Preferences, is there a Profiles pane? In a "normal" Mac, there isn't one...

Two thoughts:

1) Make sure that FCP has "Full Disk Access" in System Preferences->Security & Privacy->Privacy

(it probably already does, but it's worth confirming)

2) I'd try uninstalling Prey and see if it makes a difference. "Security" applications often seem to conflict with professional applications. If it proves not to make a difference, you can always reinstall it.

Note: I am not familiar with this application, and it may be quite proper and fine, but it seems like the most obvious suspect.

Yes - Prey is a security thing so should be running all the time.

I never have applications reopen on reboot - except for the startup items, of course.

I do have a few plug-ins. I don't really use the FXFactory one so can uninstall those.

Again - everything works fine during the edit. No crashes. It's just on export. And export works fine when all media and project is on the external.

What would cause a kernel panic in Catalina then? I have had a couple very minor annoyances that could be related -- my fingerprint / Touch ID had disappeared a couple times, my custom mail signatures don't save, and I had one app become a question mark in the dock, but then reappeared when I manually launched the app. Could this be a hard drive failure? Didn't have any of these issues before the Catalina upgrade, although I didn't have the external drive then either.

Thanks!
