Read mid-2014 MBP ssd externally

I have dropped and broken my mid 2014 15' MacBook pro; the computer no longer starts. However, the SSD is undamaged. I would like to recover the data from the hard drive by reading it with my new 2019 MBP.

After asking around, I've heard that some SSDs are soldered, and that some cannot be read from externally with an adapter. Is this the case for my model?

If I cannot buy an accessory to read the SSD, is there anything else I can do? Like going to a 3rd party repair shop or a Genius Bar directly. Will they be able to transfer the data from the SSD to my new Mac for me?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014)

Storage

  • 2.2GHz - 256GB
    • 256GB PCIe-based flash storage
    • Configurable to 512GB or 1TB flash storage.
  • 2.5GHz - 512GB
    • 512GB PCIe-based flash storage
    • Configurable to 1TB flash storage.

It is PCIe-based which is removable but i'm not sure if you can find an adapter because it has the Apple designed connector.

Similar adapter but you MBP was not listed in support but you can check with them by contacting.

I'm not sure how much is the damage to your MBP but worth giving a troubleshooting and see if it can boot into Target Disk or recovery mode.

Hope it helps.

The laptop doesn't need to boot or even have a working display to use Target Disk Mode as was suggested by @Sharhari although you will need the necessary cables & adapters. Usually if the USB and Thunderbolt ports are working and the laptop actually has power Target Disk Mode will work allowing access to the data on the SSD.
