How to stop Apple from pushing ios updates to iphone xs

I have had this problem with my old iphone 5s, and it has followed me to my iphone xs. I will NEVER update my software and Apple keeps pushing the ios update to my phone. I can delete it from Settings>General>iphone Storage most of the time, but it keeps reappearing every day when I activate my phone. After I delete it a few times Apple hides it so it doesn't appear under iPhone storage anymore. After days or weeks, it will reappear again, and I can then delete it. Then it reappears again. Once recently it didn't just appear, but started to install. I had to shut down my phone to stop the install.

Is there anyway to stop Apple from intruding on my privacy and downloading ios updates to my iphone? It is very annoying, and I know others who have iphones that aren't constantly tortured like this. Thank you to anyone who can help, or try to help. I appreciate it.

Is it possible that this behavious is tied to my Apple ID, and that if I change my Apple ID Apple might stop torturing me?

Thanks! But I won't update for sure to 13.6, or 13.x as an Apple rep all but confirmed that it has privacy invasion components related to Contact Tracing. I am actively searching for a non Apple alternative that respects privacy. The Librem 5 professes to do that, but doesn't seem ready for prime time. Android would be no better. For now, that is what Faraday bags are for. Thanks for your help.

Sorry it wasn’t more helpful.

I worked in an area w/ what I’ll term an “unusual” network infrastructure.

We all learned before arrival to inhibit Apples’s “auto updates” using the aforementioned steps; less we end-up w/ “bricked” iPhones until we returned to a “more normal” area of mobile communications.

I received alerts to “update” my iOS for several months before actually doing so; so that “method” at least worked for me and my colleagues.

Updates being “forced” upon you certainly sounds like something’s amiss.

Aha, now I understand.

Sorry, I’m pretty sure that “inhibiting automatic updates” only stops the actual install.

I’m fairly confident the the “download” was already completed.

It WOULD be nice to inhibit the download altogether; so as to prevent the “prompted but inadvertently installed” scenario.

It is VERY easy to step into that “trap.”

So, does this mean that you, and likely others, are receiving the update which results in a message asking you to install, and the red "1" in the General icon and you just leave it there indefinitely and ignore it? I know that this isn't happening with some of my friends who say they never receive the downloaded, but not installed updates, but is this what is happening for you? Thanks again for the help.

Yes. That’s exactly it.

The red reminder “badge” stayed in-place.

The “nag” prompts asking you to upgrade trailed-off after a certain amount of time (maybe a week) ...

... but would come back when the dot-1 or dot-2 “patches” of the original upgrade was released.

They too trailed-off after another week or so; but the red badge always remained.

I would have preferred to prevented the download and the “nag” screens altogether.

We were after all consciously NOT upgrading for a legitimate reason.

YW:

My understanding is that the new “Exposure Notification” components within iOS are only the structure to support tracing apps which would need to be dowloaded and installed separately.

That in itself can’t track anything.

Sure Apple says that, but I don't believe them. They also told me that they don't download the updates to my phone without my permission. That isn't true. Anyway, I don't want to upgrade so it is a moot point. And, they say you can stop the downloads with the new update but who knows if that works. They clearly don't QA their software as most, if not all bug fixes are from bugs found by users, not by Apple QA.

Apple never told me they never download updates, can you show me where they told you this. And they have at least twice pushed iOS updates due to immediate security concerns which they have the right to do. The government can already trace your iPhone non-anonymously, the API just provides developers a means to do anonymous tracing for the pandemic. And Apple and Google can remotely remove the API when the pandemic is over. The switch to activate the tracing cannot be activated until you download and install tracing software which will still be anonymous.

If you don’t trust Apple it is not reasonable that you are using their equipment. You should buy a flip phone that is cell voice only AND (due to e911) has a removable battery.
