Upgrade to Catalina and lost photo's.

I upgraded my operating system to Catalina and lost my iPhoto pictures (without knowing it). They did not automatically roll over to "Photo's." As of now, they are gone. I also lost MS Office. Anyone have these issues? If so, help!

Photos replaced iPhoto many years ago. Launch Photos with the option key held down. From the resulting dialog, choose your iPhoto Library. Photos will create a new library from your iPhoto media. Your iPhoto Library will not be changed.

iPhoto can no longer run on Catalina, because it needs some 32-bit frameworks, that are no longer available on Catalina.

But you can open your iPhoto Libraries in Photos. You may need to direct Photos to these libraries, if Photos did not automatically open your iPhoto Library.

Is our iPhoto Library in the folder Pictures, or did you move it to an external drive? Photos can only open your iPhoto Library,if it is on a compatible volume. It must not be on a volume, tat has been used for Time Machine backups, or that is accessed over the network. The file system format should be MacOS Extended (Journaled) or APFS.

To open an iPhoto Library in Photos launch the Photos.app while holding down the options key ⌥. Wait until the library chooser dialog appears, the release the and select the library that you want to open in Photos.

Somewhat similar thing happened in my situation. I upgraded from Mojave to Catalina and Photos 'worked' though I lost stretches of time randomly, like August - December 2017. No rhyme or reason.

Depending on what you upgraded from, you've probably already migrated from iPhoto to Photos, because iPhoto got pushed aside awhile ago. You're probably just calling it 'iPhoto'...which I do too.

So, I tried repairing my library (which did not do anything) and I tried opening a different library at startup (no dice either). The photos weren't in the trash or any other hidden folder...just gone. Thanks Apple!

Luckily I had some backed up on Google photos, but they are at a lower resolution, so not the 'fix'.

My Microsoft Office disappeared as well from the startup menu, but it was under 'Applications' so perhaps it's still there?
