There are two alternatives, both of which can open, read, edit an save Office focus as with Office docs or their own format: LibreOffice and Apple's Pages, Numbers and Keynote. Both are free so test them out to see if they will do what you need them to do.
Microsoft Office 2011 and earlier are 32 bit apps. Only 64 bit apps are capable of running on Catalina. Do as the error message says, upgrade your Microsoft Office.
The exact message reads like " “Microsoft Excel” needs to be updated." You can get the latest version, Microsoft Office 365, from the App Store.
In addition to BobTheFisherman's correct answer, if you are looking for an alternative: you could try the free Libre office for Mac https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/?type=mac-x86_64
