loud fan

My Mac Book Pro fan is very loud, is there anything I can do to fix it? I bought it new in 2012 so it's a few years old now,

Thanks again,

Warmly,

Christina

Maybe. Refer to About fans and fan noise in your Apple product - Apple Support.

Excerpt:

"If the fans in your Mac run fast even when it isn't experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated, you might need to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac."

Don't use cases or "skins", and never cover the keyboard with anything other than your fingers: Keep your Mac notebook within acceptable operating temperatures - Apple Support.

If none of this helps, it's possible an eight year old Mac's cooling fins (which resemble a car's radiator) have become obstructed with airborne dust, which gets drawn into the case from the outside. The right way to fix that is to have Apple or an AASP open the case and remove the contaminants, which is very easily accomplished. The wrong way is to blow the dust deeper into the case, probably obstructing the exhaust fan, so don't do that.
