how do i find out what operating system my mac is running and how do i update it if needed
Provided that you are booted into macOS, then menu : About This Mac panel will inform you of the version of macOS currently running, and the Mac description line's parenthesis will report what Mac (e.g. Late-2013, etc.) that you are using. That parenthetical information is important as it helps you determine your Mac's hardware compatibility for newer operating system releases.
