Late 2013 iMac, 21.5 inch Running External SSD USB 3. SSD Disk Speed Queries & Upgrade to Mac OS Catalina??

Hello,

I have a Late 2013, 21.5 inch iMac (specs posted in the picture, Fig. 1). This iMac originally came with the slow 5400 rpm HDD, which if anyone has experienced would know it helps in loosing lots of hair while it loads the simplest of functions.

To make the computer more usable, I decided NOT to go for the option of doing a deep dive into the rear of my iMac nor was I confident that I would be able to find someone in these Covid Days who may be able to assist in this.

So, I went online, bought myself a Samsung 2.5 Internal SSD, 860 QVO & a Transcend USB 3.1 External HDD Case. I plugged in the hard drive into the USB port at the back (all USB ports claim a USB 3.0 standard) and turned on the computer, logged in as normal (running the 5400 RPM HDD), went into Disk Utility, selected the external SSD and clicked Erase, formatted it into Mac OS Journaled and enter. Once that was done it was now time to click onto the Mac OS High Sierra Installer (I had downloaded the Mac OS High Sierra installer from the App Store in anticipation of the new SSD) which was waiting on my launchpad.

I clicked the installer and selected the External SSD as the install location and waited for the process to take shape.

All went well and my iMac is now running on the External SSD and the computer feels like a usable and worthy of the desktop space. I am booting within 45 seconds, I am being able to open multiple applications without really watching the app jump up and down constantly. All in all I would say that it is a recommended upgrade for someone whom isn't sure about making another huge investment/risk in getting the work done to install the SSD in the slot inside (I am not a geek or one who understands much about the real depth of tech, but I can say I am comfortable in being able to do most of the tech related work in my space by myself).

Now, where my tech skills slow down is the main reason I am here...

First, I wanted to understand what speeds my External SSD connected via USB 3 wold be getting. I am attaching my HDD Speed test by Blackmagic Disk Speed Test here as Fig. 2. There shall be 2 screenshots,

Fig. 2 A - This shall be the Disk speed test of the External SSD I am using now

Fig. 2 B - This shall be the Disk speed test of the Internal 5400 RPM HDD which came with the system.

My issue is, my computer is running amazingly on the External SSD drive as I mentioned, when it comes to usability of the iMac. Although, the Disk Speed Test shown in the Fig 2 set shows that the internal drive is running at a much higher speed then the External SSD which is actually the one which is making the computer usable and NOT the Internal drive, as that made the computer extremely sluggish and a show piece.

Why is this happening and is there anything I must do to ensure I am juicing out all the maximum performance from the setup I am running??? I Understand that the internal connection is always the fastest and most efficient way to run the HDD/SSD, but in this case the 5400 RPM Internal HDD is so terrible on performance but great in the Disk Test !!!

My second question is, shall I upgrade this iMac to Mac OS Catalina??? Is that going to be the death of my iMac again? Will I have to reinstall High Sierra again to be happy using the External SSD setup ??

Hope I have been able to help some people who are looking for ways to boost their old machines to become usable.

Also look forward on hearing from anyone who has a similar setup and is running the Mac OS Catalina and maybe able to share with me what the right path may be. (Yes I am not really worried about the 32 bit apps seizing to work etc.)

Thanks and be safe !!!

Are you sure you have those screenshots labeled correctly? Figure 2B, 5400 rpm, speed shows 2X the speed of the SSD, 2A.

That external SSD is not very fast compared to what I'm seeing for OWC 1TB Mercury Electra 6G drives connected with: 1 - a USB 3.0 to SATA adaptor

and 2: OWC USB 3.0 drive dock.

Both versions get speeds in this neighborhood:

which is 4 to 5 times faster.

When selecting your discs go to the Desktop folder for your user account on each of them and rerun the test. You'll have full access to that folder and may affect the resulting speed.

Both of our units have USB 3 ports capable of up to 5 Gbps.

Hey Old Toad,

Thanks for the input.

  • Unfortunately for me, the labelling in the FIG 2A & 2B are correct, the 5400 RPM Internal HDD is running faster than the External SSD is !!!!
  • I have run the Disk Speed Test on the Desktop itself, the speed is what has been shared sadly :(

Okay so I am attaching now the photos of the setup I have along with the SSD which I am running all this on.

You know what is really strange, as requested by Allan above, I ran an EtreCheck, which popped up a waring that my internal HDD is dying. Imagine that even in that state, it is managing to run faster in the Disk Speed Test, but if I try and use that to run my iMac, I may in all honesty, throw the iMac out of the window !!!! This is what baffles me, the tests say that it should be working at a great read/write speed, but actually it runs slower than the tortoise.

On the other hand, my SSD is running the entire system like it has never run before, smooth and quick, something I have never seen on this iMac since inception. BUT, the disk speed says this is the slower drive !!!! Confused !!

Do let me know what next I can do !!

Again, thank you very much Old Toad and all other friends for taking the time to chat wit me about this.

P.S: Just a small update since my first post.

  • Since I have not been using this as the main computer, I thought I would try and do some testing. All my data is through iCloud, which gave me the flexibly to use this iMac for trial and error.
  • Hence, I installed Catalina last night (sorry guys I am just trying this out) and surprisingly the computer does not feel slower at all. Sure there is some more time spent at the apple logo in the begging, post which I would say there has been about a 10% depreciation in initial speed. What I mean is, the first time I go to open any big application such as MS Excel, the app takes a short bit to open, but once open runs smoothly in most ways.
  • As some off our friends had responded to my earlier post that the iMac will slow down a lot, so fart I am waiting decently, although I am sure once the system takes its time to settle in, things may change, either goo or bad.
  • I have seen he spinning wheel a cook of times though since the update, but again only for extremely heavy requirements, the well shall show itself and quickly vanish.

Thank you

Hey All,

Thanks for the reply.

By Allan;

Let me be sure...Fig 2A is the new SSD in an external enclosure and Fig 2B is the original internal drive?

Is so, you are rightly concerned---the SDD is slower. Could the images have been mislabeled?

Response: I too thought that there has to be some kind of error here, unfortunately there is no error in the labelling of the Disk Tests, the SSD in the external enclosure is only running at that speed, even when I do a test right now !!

So the SSD I am using is the Samsung QVO 860, 1TB version. I have seen that this drive has a slightly slower speed than the 860 EVO, although the data shows a slight difference only, which I took into consideration before going for this drive as I was going to be using it externally, which would anyway cap my speed to the drive to about 350 MBps & not the current 300 Mbps. Yet this is not being achieved.

I recommend posting an EtreCheck report........

Response: I have done the EtreCheck and generated a report. I am not posting it here as of now as I am not too sure what the personal data on the report exactly and the report when generated said that some parts maybe a breach of the forum policy so I am not posting it.... Please advice how I may help proceed with that.

In a nutshell, the check has said that one HDD seems to be failing. This is the HDD which came with the iMac, 5400 RPM HDD. This is what is so troubling, the HDD which is seeming to be dying, is running at double the speed of the SSD !!!! Crazy !!!!

LEt me know what I may do next ....Cheers

There is one app that is not helping, Memory Clean. The macOS handles memory dynamically and does not need any 3rd party apps to interfere. Uninstall it according to the developer's instructions.

Do you really need ExpressVPN? Unless it's required for banking or by an employer it does little for protection and a lot for using system resources. Hey Old Toad,

Thanks for giving me the clarity so far.

Ive been away a few days cuz I have been doing a lot of trial and error.

So, to start with, I returned the HDD Case which I got and got a new one, the exact same Transcend as before. I did this as I wasn't sure if the cable was actually doing the trick. (on the internal 5400 RPM, I have reformatted the HDD to act as a pure storage drive for my iMac now).

Now, when I run the Disk Speed Test, the results are closer to where I would have liked (Run 1). So obviously I am ecstatic and happy to have the best I can form this old iMac.

The issue, is when I let the Disk Speed Test continue to run, the speeds for the write start dropping significantly. This will be visible in Run 4 & Run 5. I have taken these screenshots while the test was going on because the speed sometimes drops by the second time I try. ALTHOUGH, I yet do not feel the computer being sluggish or slow, even though I am now running the latest Catalina version on the SSD.

What suggestions ?? What more must I check ??

Thank you again !!

Samsung was once the gold standard for SSDs but that reputation seems to be picking up some tarnishing, at least in Macs. Current best performers for Macs are SSDs from Crucial and OWC. Also their support ins rather spotty (I'm being kind).

A 6GB/sec SSD in a USB3 external enclosure attached to a USB 3 port of the computer show do around 400MB/sec. Is the drive on a hub or directly connected to a port on the computer?

I recommend posting an EtreCheck report. Without revealing any personal or security information. it wll show device speed details and what is set as boot. It is in the Mac App Store and all the senior members here are comfortable with it because its developer is a valued contributor here.

I was trying to post images showing how to properly post the report to get around issues with the forum software, but there is a bug in that today too! 🙄
