the sound on my mac is not working and I do not see the option for the sound to come out of the speakers.

Have you had anything plugged into the headphone jack lately, pretty common for the Jack to get misaligned.

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.
