I need to replace the phone but I can not get the serial number through the settings since the screen stays unresponsive.

Use iTunes: You can find the Serial Number for your device in Finder or iTunes.

click here If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen - Apple Support
