No, the only way it can be unlocked is by the person who enabled Activation Lock. As it’s an old friend just ask him to follow these instructions—>What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

I also had another question I have a iPhone 6 I bought off a old friend but it’s activation locked And I can’t get ahold of him is there anyway you guys would be able to unlock it I looked up the IMEI number it says it’s clean
