I can't connect to family apple news account

I can't connect to a new family apple news account on my iphone or macbook pro. Following advice online, I updated the iOs and MacOs, but still can't seem to connect - it wants me to pay again. The point of purchasing a family account is so that we don't need to jump through hoops (or pay) for two subscriptions. Surely there is a way to do this, fairly quickly. Explanation would be much appreciated.

Solved. Although I was signed in as me, but I was listed as paying through his account. So even though I didn't have to pay, and was linked to the account that did pay, it was somehow an obstacle. Now removed.
