What are the proper time code and HDMI settings for Final Cut Pro X?

I have a Canon video camcorder: XA11

I has an HDMI port and can be set to

generated time code over HDMI.

From previous post:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251601368

I am told that FCP will not record from an external

device if it doesn't send time code;

So,

The settings for time code on the camera are

preset and regen

The are other related options:

freerun

and recordrun

For HDMI output there are options

480i

480P

720P

1080i

1080P

What are the useful, if not optimum

settings?

The HDMI signal from the camera is connected

to a Magwell HDMI to USP 3.0 adapter:

(see previous discussion reference above)

I got a reply from Magewell about the issue

and they stated that the adapter does not

support FCP. But I suspect that is because it

does not generate time code, whereas the

camera can if set up to.

Thank you for time and attention

Hey anotherJeff273. I have no idea if running the Canon HDMI output through that USB adaptor will work but I can pitch in my 2 cents about timecode.

For the timecode settings, I don't think it really matters depending on how you plan to use what gets recorded in FCPX (assuming it actually makes it in there). Setting it to Free Run and configuring the camera's internal date/time to be correct would make it easier to sort through footage.

For the HDMI picture output, I'd set it to whatever the camera is set to record to, most likely 1080P.

It wasn't clear to me from the camera's manual on the canon site that timecode *data* was included in the HDMI output or just a video overlay of the timecode. https://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/3/0300027913/03/xa11-15-im3-n-en.pdf

Good luck and let us know if it works!

In the manual for the Canon XA11 I have

there is an option: HDMI time code

The text is:

When set to ON, the HDMI signal output from the camcorder

includes the camcorder's time code. (page 126 XA11 & XA15

HD camcorder).

Then in HDMI output there is also an 'auto' setting as well

as the numerical options.

I did turn on the time code over HDMI option and set the

freerun and when I fired up the Macbook Pro and launched

FCPX I still did not see it as an option for an import source.

There is a parallel issue also related to part of the previous

post re Quick Time Player and video recording:

1: I had tried Quick Time Player and when it was set to record

video, I got a dialog stating that Quick Time Player wanted access

to the iSight camera. I mistakenly chose no in the dialog. Now

when I launch Quick Time Player I am informed that it does not

have access to the built in camera and I DON'T know how I would

give it access in the future.

Be that as it may, I also found in Quick Time Player an obscure option list

that listed the Magewell capture device as a source and it was marked as access denied.

As in the previous post, why isn't there a system or other preference that

can allow or disallow access to the internal camera for specified applications?

As well how did access get denied to the capture device with out a request

to me the user. Is it because it is to be instead of the internal camera and the

internal camera is denied?

Perhaps the answer has to do with confidential security concerns.

But that notwithstanding security concerns, I would think that giving

admin users the ability to change the settings would be 'user friendly'.

Thank you for responses

JK
