Will not boot in safe mode HIGH SIERRA.. got a problem!

It took 2 mins to boot-up computer...when I tried to boot in safe mode...holding down SHIFT when hearing start sound, the screen stays dark but I can see my mouse arrow.

The reason I tried Safe mode is because my computer has been very very slow which I posted previously https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251603582?page=1 and was told it would help...but again a dark screen at start up.

I did run the First Aid on Disk Utility as well

I also ran etrecheck report, shows nothing! Tried using Malwarebytes…same, slow slow slow

Nothing seems to work!

iMac 27″, macOS 10.13

I'm not sure if you mean that literally or not but if you are that's clearly bad news.

A Mac that spontaneously begins to perform poorly without having recently installed something is generally a symptom of startup drive failure. An inability to boot Safe Mode would definitively confirm that suspicion.

Think I am in safe mode...had to sign in which I never have to do BUT it window came up asking if I want to restore previous session. How can I tell if im in safe mode or not?
