I understand that it's not possible to exclude specific folders from Finder searching, but can Finder be induced to ignore subfolders? For example, if I want to search the current folder for a file type (such as PDF) I know how to set that condition in a finder search window. But I want to limit the search to the current folder only, ignoring any subfolders. Can I do this in Mojave's FInder?

Finder cannot be induced to ignore sub-folders (as you cannot tell Spotlight to not index sub-folders) though you can configure it to search the current directory first in the Finder Preferences : Advanced panel:
Now, a search will provide a sub-toolbar with your user name, and This Mac on it, and each are clickable depending on the scope of your search.
I also happen to configure the Finder to always open in my home directory via the Finder Preferences : General panel:
New Finder windows show: [ 🏠 shortname ↕︎ ]

That's what I suspected. I know how to do what I want from the command line with the find command, but it would be a lot easier if I could do it from the Mac UI. Thanks.
