How are US holidays selected for My Apple calendar?

How are US holidays selected for My Apple calendar? It seems like it is getting out of control. There are holidays on my iPhone that no one has ever heard of and have no importance in US history. Take Eid Al-Adha for example; this maybe a holiday somewhere but it’s NOT a US holiday. Who decides what US holidays are on my iPhone and what is the criteria? Please help me understand.

how can I get rid of certain holidays on my iPhone?

Thanks!

There actually is no such thing as a “USA holiday”. The USA federal government does not have the constitutional authority to declare a national holiday. At the best, the Federal Government can only declare a holiday for Federal Government Employees., but nobody else.

So the collection of holidays included in any particular personal, local or state holiday calendar anyone puts online to use or subscribe to are nothing more than some or all of those federal government employee holidays, various and different State holidays, and various and different local holidays that the issuer of the subscription calendar chooses to include.

Every single State chooses to not observe at least one Federal Government Employee holiday with instead one of their own State Employee holiday. And every single School district and company chooses which Federal Employee, State Employee and local or traditional holiday they choose to officially observe.

So if the Apple default decided holiday calendar doesn’t meet your needs, you need to turn that off and find a subscription calendar that you prefer, or make your own.

Hello Help-me-understand and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

It appears you are trying to get a more traditional view of US holidays than the one currently presented by the US Holidays view native to the Calendar app on a Mac or an iOS device.

A quick online search will turn up dozens of sources for very specific calendars to which you can subscribe. These include some more limited views of holidays celebrated in the US or you can even find subscribe-able calendars limited to only federally recognized holidays.

If you subscribe to one of those and then turn off the system-generated US Holidays calendar while in the Calendars view of the Calendars app on an iPhone or in the sidebar in Calendars on a Mac or in iCloud, you will get only the less-expansive holiday list to which you created a subscription.

(If you look at the end of that article you'll see a note stating that you can't unsubscribe from or delete the system-generated US Holidays calendar, but you can turn it off and not view it.)
