Getting a new Apple ID

What if, after many years with an Apple ID, you changed your last name and don't want the old name on your Apple ID anymore? I couldn't find anything about how to go about this and transfer the historical data.

You can't remove/change @iCloud.com, @me.com or @mac.com aliases.

I read that article prior to posting my question and it didn't seem to address the matter of taking an "oldname@icloud.com" ID and changing it to "newname@icloud.com".

I understand the implication that, once I have the new @icloud.com, I can put it in place of the old.

Did I miss something in the text? How do I get "newname@icloud.com" ?
