I have setup a new gmail account on my mac in apple mail. When I send an email, the new address is not available in the "From" drop down list of my mail accounts. How do I get it there?

Look in the Gmail account in Preferences to see if it has its own SMTP server set up for the account. It may be using an SMTP server from another account.
I've seen various similar problems with the SMTP server settings on various accounts. I've never found a permanent solution. I usually just kept trying to change them. If it is an IMAP Gmail account with everything stored online, you could try removing the account and re-adding it.
