Memory on Phone

I was unable to download today's update because of lack of storage space. Surprised, I started to dump some photos to make space. I found photos on my phone from 2013. I did not buy the phone until 2017. I now think my entire picture file from my PC has been put on my phone (no wonder there is no space!).

How do I take these pics (hundreds) of my phone, without losing them?

Thanks.

PS. I just checked my wife's Iphone, and she has all of our pictures on her phone as well. We are both sure that we did not do this knowingly.

You have a few things going that I would like to draw your attention to-

  1. It appears that you and your wife are using the same Apple ID and therefore are seeing the common pictures and probably are seeing the same contact list as well. When you use the same Apple ID then you both are using the same iCloud account and therefore your devices are synced alike. The normal procedure is to use different Apple IDs and then use FAMILY SHARING to control what is shared including pictures.
  2. You are right. Your 2013 pics were probably synced from your PC as I am assuming that you have iCloud for Windows (If it is a Windows PC) installed and signed in. If it is a Mac then same principle applies with the Photos app.
  3. How do you free up storage space without losing the pics that you delete from the photos app? That is the question that concerns you. Note that iCloud for photos is a sync service so if you begin deleting photos on your iPhone or even your PC then it will delete those everywhere on all your devices signed on to the same iCloud account.
    • I recommend that you export all your photos from your PC (which are the same as on your iPhones) to another folder or a drive. Once you do that then you will maintain those photos/videos independently.
    • Once the photos/videos are exported and safe in another folder/drive then you can begin deleting photos/videos from iCloud from your iPhone or from your PC iCloud app.
    • The action above will begin deleting photos on all devices to make space on those devices. NOTE that you already have the original photos saved to another folder and therefore have those as backup like you wanted.

Hope all of this helps. I know it sounds daunting however it is not. It is time consuming though.
